File shares, often referred to as Network Attached Storage (NAS) supports use cases for simultaneous access by hosts to a shared data set, from database repositories to home directories. The most commonly used file shares have traditionally taken the form of dedicated and special purpose hardware in the data center, managed by storage specialists.
Apart from core connectivity and compatibility standards, NAS solutions today have enabled robust performance, replication, tiering, backup and data protection features that users have become reliant upon for their shared data pools. Commonly deployed options for implementing NAS on AWS are Elastic File System (EFS) and Network File System (NFS).
